This fellowship consists of a 3-day on-site intensive workshop. The workshop is comprised of didactic and active learning opportunities. The workshop brings together current knowledge in gerontology, interprofessional education (IPE), and IPE pedagogy.
Following the 3 day intensive on site workshop, fellows will continue their faculty development involvement through participation in online activities.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the principles of Interprofessional Education.
- Demonstrate interprofessional teamwork through seminars and group exercises.
- Recognize current research and models of care in gerontology.
- Examine and compare a variety of adult learning principles, technologies and modalities.
- Investigate cultural competence and humility in the heath care system.
- Develop skills in recognizing and evaluating interprofessional geriatric education.
- Relate the importance of health literacy principles in the care of older individuals.
- Design Interprofessional Education curriculum through a 9-month mentorship and online education experience.
Prior to Arrival (Pre-work):
- Pre-test: Roles/functions and attitudes of members in a healthcare team.
- Survey of previous experiences with learning technologies/modalities.
- Description of Desired Goals for Team and Course.
- Pre-Assigned Readings.
- Research: Sample Interprofessional Education (IPE) Curricula, objectives and outcomes.

Educational Environment and Learners:
Sponsored by Eastern Pennsylvania-Delaware Geriatric Education Center of Thomas Jefferson University, Marywood University and Christiana Care Health System.
This fellowship will prepare teams to teach interprofessional care of the older patient. The experience will begin with a 3 day intensive introduction on Thomas Jefferson University’s campus. Sessions will be taught through: demonstrations, self-study, small and large group sessions, e-learning, role-playing, and post-course mentoring.
Teams will identify an individual mentor from EPaD GEC and the on campus intensive experience will be followed by a 9 month mentored online experience including individual online modules, guided learning, discussion boards and ongoing mentorship to support implementation and evaluation of new interprofessional geriatric curriculum.
Interested teams of healthcare educators must apply in order to be considered to participate in the fellowship. The application requires a description of the interprofessional geriatric curriculum to be implemented, a brief description of the educational environment and targeted learners, and letter of support from appropriate educational and academic leadership. (i.e. course directors, chairs, curriculum committees, and or deans). The fellowship is FREE; participants will be responsible for the cost of lodging and meals while in Philadelphia.
Eligibility Requirements:
- A Team of Faculty (3-5 members representing at least 2 disciplines).
- Proposal for implementing interprofessional geriatric education and evaluation.
- One letter of support from Dean/Chair/Course Director(s) for implementing curriculum within appropriate courses. (This letter should include the entire team)
- A letter of support that confirms faculty release time to participate in the fellowship for EACH faculty team member.
Application Requirements:
- Biosketch from each individual or team member (Please note that the first team member that registers will create an application id. He/she must share the application id with the group, so that they can use the application id to enter in their information.)
- Description of Proposed Interprofessional Geriatric Education Project Outline(3 page max, 12 pt. Times New Roman, double spaced) For outline instructions please see the Proposal Content section.
- Description of proposed evaluation plan. (1 page max, 12 pt. Times New Roman, double spaced) For outline instructions please see the Proposal Content section.
- One letter of support from Dean/Chair/Course Director(s) for implementing curriculum within appropriate courses. (This letter should include the entire team)
- A letter of support that confirms faculty release time to participate in the fellowship for EACH faculty team member.
Proposal Content:
Required information to include in your Proposed Interprofessional Geriatric Education Project Outline includes:
- A description of your academic disciplines.
- A description of how you formed your team.
- A description of your current curriculum and the gap that exists relating to interprofessional education.
- Include the content area you will focus on and why it is important.
- A description of your proposed implementation strategies.
Required information to include in your Proposed Evaluation Plan includes:
- Methods of evaluation (i.e. pre-post test, attitude assessment, action plans, etc)
*Time will be available during the fellowship to further develop your proposed curriculum and evaluation methods. These first drafts will allow us to view your interests and your project direction.
